FRECKLES

FRECKLES

Freckles are made up of skin cells known as keratinocytes, appearing as small brown spots on areas subjected to sun exposure. They are caused by the uneven distribution of melanin, the brown skin pigment in skin. Areas of the skin with more melanin than others appear darker. The chances of people genetically susceptible to having freckles increase with constant exposure to the sun. As ultraviolet (UV) rays hit the skin, the epidermis thickens up more, stimulating melanocytes to produce more melanin, causing freckles to darken.
